For Better Animal Rights Protection

The NDP has a long history of defending animal rights and has introduced numerous bills to combat animal cruelty.

If you also believe that animal rights must be protected, sign here:

In particular, the NDP is calling for:

  • The creation of a new criminal offense for negligence in failing to properly care for an animal;

  • Allow courts to impose a lifetime ban on owning animals for repeat offenders;

  • End the export of live horses destined for slaughter.

During the 44th Parliament, the NDP’s Critic for Agriculture and Agri-Food, Alistair MacGregor, tabled a petition in the House of Commons urging the government to end the transport of live horses for slaughter:

“The practice of loading live horses onto cargo planes and shipping them overseas to be slaughtered later is inhumane, yet common in Canada. It is time to put an end to it. Horses are highly sensitive animals, aware of their surroundings, and shipping them live often results in a prolonged and painful end to their lives. ”

We must continue in this direction. New Democrats envision a society that more closely connects people with all aspects of their environment.
